I was 16 when I was first exposed to the ideas of Personal Development. It all started when I picked up a book written by Anthony Robbins, Unlimited Power, in my father's mini-library at the back of my house. Looking back, I can say that I am just like most teenagers - (1) I didn't know what I want to do in the future, and (2), I didn't care.

The moment I saw the title of the book, I found my curiosity growing exponentially. "Can someone really improve their life just by reading one book?", "How can this book help me?", "Can someone really change their destiny and their life?" Curious, I flipped open the book. Then, something strange happened - The more I read, the more excited and thrilled I felt. Soon, skepticism was replaced with inspiration. Suddenly...

I felt unstoppable. I felt powerful. For once, I felt in total control of my life.

The Birth of Excellence

There and then, I discovered the the science of personal development, Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP). Strategies after strategies, ideas after ideas - all of them hit me like a ton of bricks, one after another. I took notes - lots of them. I participated in all the exercises written in the book. And whenever possible, I put each newly-learned strategies into practice.

Little by little, one step at a time, I integrated the principles that I have learned into my life until one day, the people around me - my friends and teachers - they started to realize the difference in me.

From average academic grades (lots of B's, some C's and D's), I started to achieve A's. When I graduated from my Primary School education, I found myself belonging to the top 10% in my cohort of which I then entered into one of the 'Elite' schools in Singapore, Nan Hua Secondary School (now Nan Hua High School). And that's just the beginning...

From an average cadet in an established uniformed youth organisation in Singapore (National Cadet Corps) in school, I rose above the rest of my peers, eventually being promoted to the rank of a Staff Sergeant where I became a cadet leader, leading people of my age. And that's not all...

During my National Service in the Singapore Military Force, again, I found myself belonging to the top 10% of the recruits and I was chosen and selected to enter Singapore's Officer Cadet School (OCS). Now, here's the kicker...

Just a while ago, I was put up for a couple of interviews where I was then selected to represent Singapore in the annual International Cadet Conference (ICC) held in National Defense Academy (NDA), Japan. Alongside foreign cadets from all around the world (U.S., U.K., France, Philippines, Korea - a total of 10 countries were involved), the conference lasted about 4 days.

I started out introducing my personal achievements not to impress you but to impress upon you that if personal development has worked for me, it can work for you too. That if I can make use of what I learned in Personal Development to change my life, so can you!

I remember watching the movie, 'Pursuit of Happyness' starring Will Smith (acting as Christopher Gardner) where he tells his son:

'You got a dream... You gotta protect it. People can't do something themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it. If you want something, go get it. Period.'
